In the beginning of 2018 we were disappointed to have missed entering our products into the Free From Food Awards, so we waited a whole year in order to enter them for 2019! In December 2018 we entered the awards and in January we sent off our products for judging. A few weeks later we found out two of the sauces had been shortlisted for the awards and we were absolutely ecstatic!!
To be shortlisted in the Fodmap Friendly category of the most highly regarded awards in the Free From industry was just the best news ever, I was quite literally jumping for joy! These were the first awards we had entered as a company and to be shortlisted was just phenomenal, but in no way did we expect what happened next!
After being shortlisted, we then had to wait a number of weeks until the Awards Evening, hosted at The Royal College of Physicians in London on Wednesday 20th March 2019.
As I headed to London to the Awards Evening, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I didn’t know how formal/informal it would be, whether I would know anyone there and how the evening would go. I wasn’t really feeling nervous, I guess because I wasn’t expecting to win. I was just so happy to have been shortlisted and invited to the evening I was just enjoying that feeling.
The evening started with networking so I spoke to a couple of people I knew and then chatted to a couple of other entrepreneurs who had also had products shortlisted. Then Michelle and Cressida kicked off the awards! There was a big screen whether they would list the Bronze and Silver Winners and read them out, and then move onto the Gold Winner and you were invited onto stage to accept a certificate and have your photo taken with the representative from the company sponsoring the category.
After what felt like forever, it was finally time for the FODMAP Friendly category and at this point I suddenly became extremely nervous and palms started to sweat! I then saw the Bronze winners and we weren’t there, but it still didn’t sink in… then I saw Silver – Bay’s Kitchen Sweet & Sour Sauce… and I nearly passed out! To win Silver in the Free From Awards was more than I could have ever dreamt of! Then it went to the Gold Winner and I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears when it was announced Bay’s Kitchen Tomato & Basil Stir-in Sauce had won the Gold award! I was literally shaking as I tried to make it through the crowd to the stage, I honestly thought “I am going to trip up and fall flat on my face on stage!”
I was so nervous and excited, it was the most overwhelming feeling I had ever had, to know that my company I have spent years trying to launch and get right, had just gone and won Silver AND Gold at the Free From Food Awards… WOW… Just WOW!

Winning not only Silver but the Gold too was the most amazing and overwhelming experience I have had to date at Bay’s Kitchen. It was a shame that Tim from FODMAP Friendly, who sponsored the awards couldn’t be at the awards show, but Michelle kindly presented our certificate on his behalf.
