Low FODMAP vs Gluten Free: What's the Difference?

Low FODMAP vs Gluten Free: What's the Difference?

Gluten Free Diet vs Low FODMAP Diet

Whilst it often may seem like it, the Low FODMAP Diet is in fact NOT a Gluten-Free Diet. However, the Low FODMAP Diet does remove many of the Gluten containing grains from your diet (oligosaccharides), which is why it may appear to be Gluten-Free. The important thing to note is that unless you are coeliac, you don’t need to worry about Gluten cross-contamination when on the Low FODMAP Diet.

So, so what is the difference between Gluten and Oligosaccharides?

Gluten – is a type of protein found in grains, including wheat, rye, spelt, and barley.

Oligosaccharides – these are one of the types of FODMAP sugar and it comes in two forms.

  1. Oligos-fructans, which are found in wheat, rye, barley, garlic, onions, asparagus and many other foods.
  2. Oligos-galactans, which are found in chickpeas, lentils, legumes, pulses and other foods.

Many scientists now believe that it is actually FODMAPs (or more specifically Fructans) which many people are intolerant to, not gluten.
